چکیده

Vibrotactile signals are produced during haptic exploration of compressible objects through a variety of contact and bulk mechanical processes. Prior studies have found that vibrotactile feedback can influence stiffness perception, but the reason for this is unknown. Here, we investigated the role of vibration in stiffness perception during object squeezing. We propose a physically motivated explanatory model and rendering algorithm relating vibrotactile and force-displacement cues, then present a novel haptic interface that was designed to accurately reproduce these cues. Finally, we present the results of an experiment on the perceptual integration of vibrotactile and force-displacement cues during oneand two-finger stiffness perception. The results indicate that vibration feedback can increase perceived object softness during interaction with one finger, but preclude a similar conclusion for two-finger grasping. We argue that the results support the proposed model once innate differences in oneand two-finger exploration are accounted for.

Integrating physically based sound models in a multimodal rendering architecture

This paper presents a multimodal rendering architecture that integrates physically based sound models with haptic and visual rendering. The proposed sound modeling approach is compared to other existing techniques. An example of implementation of the architecture is presented, that realizes bimodal (auditory and haptic) rendering of contact stiffness. It is shown that the proposed rendering sch...

An Analysis of Perceptual Instability during Haptic Texture Rendering

This paper investigates the problem of perceived instability during haptic texture rendering. We focus on the perceptual analysis of the stability of textured surfaces rendered with a force-reflecting device. The method of limits is used to assess the detection thresholds for perceived instability in terms of the stiffness of the virtual textured surfaces. We varied texture rendering method, ex...

An Efficient Virtual Teeth modeling for dental training system

This paper describes an implementation of virtual teeth modeling for a haptic dental simulation. The system allows dental students to practice dental procedures with realistic tactual feelings. The system requires fast and stable haptic rendering and volume modeling techniques working on the virtual tooth. In our implementation, a volumetric implicit surface is used for intuitive shape modifica...

A Multimodal Haptic Mouse for Visually Impaired People

This work describes early research activity on a haptic mouse interface. This project aims to join tactile and kinesthetic feedbacks in order to improve the accessibility of the PC to visually impaired persons. In this phase a planar haptic interface has been developed. It is based on two linear motors, which allows a simple mechanical structure, with high stiffness and without backlash. The sy...

Multimodal Feedback in 3D Target Acquisition

We investigated dynamic target acquisition within a 3D scene, rendered on a 2D display. Our focus was on the relative effects of specific perceptual cues provided as feedback. Participants were asked to use a specially designed input device to control the position of a volumetric cursor, and acquire targets as they appeared one by one on the screen. To compensate for the limited depth cues affo...
